چکیده

This paper concerns the problem of minimizing the maximum link utilization of IP telecommunication networks under the joint use of traditional IGP routing protocols, such as IS–IS and OSPF, and the more sophisticated MPLS-TE technology. It is shown that the problem of choosing the optimal routing, both under working conditions and under single link failure scenarios, can be cast as a linear program of reasonable size. The proposed model is validated by a computational experimentation performed on synthetic and real networks: the obtained results show that the new approach considerably reduces the maximum link utilization of the network with respect to simply optimizing the IGP weights, at the cost of adding a limited number of label switched paths (LSPs). Optimizing the set of IGP weights within the overall approach further improves performances. The computational time needed to solve the models matches well with real-time requirements, and makes it possible to consider network design problems. & 2011 Elsevier Ltd All rights reserved.

Prioritized OSPF-TE Mechanism for Multimedia Applications in MPLS Networks

Real time multimedia applications such as video streaming have been greatly introduced in networks and require Quality of Service (QoS). In MPLS based networks, OSPF with traffic engineering is widely used. It is responsible for finding feasible routes within networks, which have link state constraints such as bandwidth or delay. To serve dynamically changed traffic characteristics, OSPFTE need...

Edge-based traffic engineering for OSPF networks

This paper proposes and evaluates a novel, edge-based approach, which we call the kset Traffic Engineering (TE) method, to perform traffic engineering in OSPF networks by partitioning traffic into uneven k traffic sets. The traffic partitioning and splitting takes place only at network edges, leaving the core simple. We theoretically prove that if k is large enough, the k-set TE method achieves...

Traffic engineering with OSPF-TE and RSVP-TE: Flooding reduction techniques and evaluation of processing cost

This paper considers two important aspects related to the control plane of Traffic Engineered IP/MPLS networks: the “flooding reduction” mechanisms and the evaluation of processing cost for signaling and routing protocols. The flooding reduction mechanisms are needed to reduce the amount of information exchanged by Traffic Engineering enabled routing protocols. The trade off between the amount ...

Optimized routing adaptation in IP networks utilizing OSPF and MPLS

In this paper routing adaptation methodologies are investigated, which utilize conventional routing protocols such as OSPF in combination with MPLS. While having the majority of traffic routed along optimized shortest paths, MPSL is only partly introduced to complement the adaptation process. We present a novel algorithm based on simulated annealing to optimize link metrics in OSPF networks. Th...

Path selection and bandwidth allocation in MPLS networks

Multi-protocol Label Switching extends the IP destination-based routing protocols to provide new and scalable routing capabilities in connectionless networks using relatively simple packet forwarding mechanisms. MPLS networks carry traffic on virtual connections called label switched paths. This paper considers path selection and bandwidth allocation in MPLS networks in order to optimize the ne...
